About the workshop “Individuality in Contact” with Irene Sposetti
This weekend we will approach some of the research I am focused on which I am developing in these last years.
The following are some themes and questions which will accompany us along the workshop.
Looking at how we can define and explore individuality as movers in Contact Improvisation, emphasizing constant alertness and presence in our selves, while cultivating physical empathic listening.
How to maintain a certain degree of awareness, self-reliance, and responsibility while partnering? How to find real mutual understanding while investigating?
How can we attain subtle negotiation in choice-making while relating improvising and dealing with weight?
Defining individuality and presence in order to avoid “collapsing into the other”, physically and psychologically, avoiding drowning in ourselves, in sensations or emotions, avoiding getting fixated in ideas and expectations.
I focus on how weight gets distributed and organized in the body while relating to the floor, to the shift of levels and spatial motion.
How balancing one’s own structure can be the main key for effortless and agile relating in contact, discarding, therefore, the equation in which contact means always “baring of weight”.
Activating and releasing body parts in order to acquire promptness, lightness, and strength in responding to one another in the unpredictable pathways of improvised movement.
Falling or rising, getting/offering support, leaning, tracking and following, having as main tool one’s own ability to organize a fluid self-alignment at all times, managing wisely and efficiently the distribution of weight in motion.
I research as well how empowering individual awareness and independency in partnering informs one’s own choices and therefore nourishes the relation to my imagination, my ability to play and create.
I love to highlight the expressiveness and communicative skills of CI as a dance form and consequently avoid narrowing the range of movements and qualities of my dance in the attempt of creating only consensual flow,
or in the attempt of achieving known pathways typical of “modern CI vocabulary”. Hence I look for ways to access a creative dialectic in the improvisations, being at ease in the unknown, collaborating in composing, welcoming questions, emptiness, variations of tone, tempos, enabling abstraction or narratives to arise from the dance.

She is being offering dance training, making performances and lectures in universities, schools, companies, festivals, cultural institutes, and independent platforms throughout Europe and Asia.
The main theme of her movement research is Improvisation. Through her practice, she aims for a heightened state of presence, increased awareness in the body, effortless motion, and a broadening of the technical and investigative skills of the mover. She has a particular interest in intuitive learning processes, empowering individuals, and promoting independent research and artistic projects. She explores inner and outer ecology – believing that a healthy and creative relationship to the body can generate awareness, trust and authenticity in our lives as individuals and as a collective.
Her dance practice is mainly inspired by Contact Improvisation, Instant Composition Techniques, Experiential Anatomy, Body-Mind Centering, Body Work, Yoga, Meditation and Singing Practices.
Irene is deeply engaged in the research of Contact & Improvisation by teaching, organizing dance events and promoting the growth of new CI communities, especially in China and India.
